You probably should not join IT courses

Hey school leavers,

I heard you enjoy playing video games a lot, you love to tappity tappity in front of your computer, and you appreciate the engineering marvels jam packed in a smartphone.

Then you felt inspired by millionaire geek figures, eg Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates etc. And you think like “Hey, maybe if I join IT industry by getting an IT degree, I can become one of them!”

No.

A lot of people hate programming, a lot of people graduated with a great looking degree, yet have no idea, no skills, no talent to develop a product.

You could be one of them.

As harsh as it may sound, I would like you to sit down and rethink why you want to attend an IT course that is about to cost you (and your parents) RM70K++ and the best 4 years of your life. Is it worth it?

Is programming what you want to do? Or you felt compelled to do it simply because you think it’s the surefire way to get you to the millionaire throne?

I suggest you to pick up some programming books or follow some tutorials. If you are interested in developing websites, I suggest you to try out some coding schools like Codecademy, Codeschool, or W3Schools. If you are talking about learning C++ or Java or whateva, I suggest you not to touch those water, yet.

Spend some time with those websites, if you still like programming and coding, you can go ahead and gamble your money and time on a piece of paper.

Else, think again.

  1. “Spend some time with those websites, if you still like programming and coding, you can go ahead and gamble your money and time on a piece of paper.”

This particular sentence is quite misleading. Even if you like programming and coding, you must NOT go for that piece of paper cause Uni dun teach shit. Just keep learning on the web, and you can get a job that out-earns even a degree holder and 10x more skilled than a Master holder.

What do you think?
